Glamour in the Kitchen!!

This is me home from work. I'm wearing a very old LBD by Topshop, M&S opaque tights and New Look Mary Janes.

Personal Style Week

According to a post on the British Style Bloggers' website today, last week was Personal Style Week. Which means;

This week is a celebration of everything that makes up your unique identity! We're pushing away trends, stereotype and labels and instead glorifying all the little things that make up your personal style. Personal style has to do with everything--from how you dress to how you decorate your apartment to how you live your life! How would you describe your personal style?

I know it's a week late but liked the idea. So, while I give some thought to my personal style I thought I'd put it to you all. Send me a comment describing your style and even send me a photo, if you can. You might even find yourself on here!

I know, it's a little late but it is beautiful. And I thought it went with the previous posts.

10 things I like about... Autumn

Lazy Sundays, rain, a new school term and the longing for an open fire can only mean one thing... Autumn is here.

Spring might be the season of all things new and expectation but it is often bittersweet as it gives way to the disappointment of another British summer.

Autumn, however, promises little but delivers much.

Walking down my road yesterday I couldn't help but notice the beautiful colours of the fallen leaves on the ground and those that were still hanging in there, so to speak. The tree-lined avenue looked lovely in the late sun.

It got me thinking about the things I like about this season that doesn't pretend to be anything but what it is; cold, windy, rainy and miserable:

1. I love that snuggly feelingI get when I'm all wrapped up in my winter woolies - v excited about getting out my winter coats, hats and scarves!

2. Autumn leaves. The colours. Beautiful.

3. Opaque tights. (I think I have made my love of these very obvious by now!)

4. The knowledge that Christmas (my very very favourite time of year) is getting closer.

5. Bonfire night and fireworks in the cold.

6. New season's clothes.

7. Boots. Ankle, knee high, over-the-knee. All gorgeous.

8. Lazy Sunday afternoons spent on the sofa, watching old movies and the wind and rain outside... knowing there is nowhere else I need to be!

9. Gingerbread Lattes back in Starbucks (soon).

10. New term feeling. That feeling of going back to school. New stationery. The smell of new pencils.

LUST LIST: Mulberry Bayswater

Whilst shopping in the new John Lewis in Cardiff I came face-to-face with my future handbag; the Mulberry Bayswater. I am in love with this bag. Officially.

Mulberry, like Burberry, is a quintessentially English brand whose products exude luxury and elegance in equal measure.

Founded in 1971 in the Somerset countryside, where it continues to have its headquarters today, it could not be much more English if it tried!

Of course, it has expanded, not only its manufacturing across the globe but has also expanded its products into clothing and other accessories. But it still retains 30% of its production in the UK.

The Bayswater, for me, combines effortless style with a very British sense of practicality. It is, without a doubt, beautiful. But it's pockets and size make it the bag of choice for the modern working girl.

For now, however, I will just have to lust after it...

LUST LIST: the classic Burberry trench

Burberry returned to London Fashion Week, from Milan, for the first time in eight years on Tuesday.

Christopher Bailey, Burberry's creative director, re-worked the classic trench for Spring/Summer 2010 for a funky twist, in pink and cut above the knee (see the images above).

The Burberry trench is surely one of the most iconic of British designs. The brand was founded in 1856, came to prominence during the First World War, when it produced its trench coats for the British army. Unsurprisingly, they quickly became popular amongst civilians too. This popularity continued throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first.

Christopher Bailey told Grazia, "The Burberry trench is iconic, unique, functional, ageless and timeless."

The trench is quite possibly one of the most versatile designs too. Anyone can put the trench on and make it their own; from HM The Queen to a member of Queen!

And it seems that Burberry have recognised its importance; next month the brand is launching a website dedicated to celebrating the trench. Check it out at www.artofthetrench.com.

Of course, I can't write about the Burberry trench without mentioning the current 'face' of their latest advertising campaign, young Brit actress, Emma Watson. This has to be my most favourite ad campaign of 2009. It is gorgeous. The photography and the model and the clothing all come together to produce some truly beautiful images. Vogue France's August edition featured three of the best ads for the campaign.

How to... rip or fray jeans

Over coffee at lunch today one of my girl friends, Hannah (Steele!), asked about how to rip a pair of jeans; where to put the rips and what to use to make the rips. We then came across the above ad in the magazine aisle! So, I promised that I would do a little research and get back to her on that one! This is the result of that research:

1. I think the first point should be – get a very old pair of jeans (maybe from a charity shop) to practice on! Don’t do it straight on to a lovely new pair that you have spent £££ on!

2. Do your research! Look in magazines, shops, on line at pictures of ripped jeans and decide which ones you like best; those with massive rips at the knee or those with more subtle frayed bits. I personally think that the best place is just above the knee but this is only my preference.

3. Another piece of advice that I found during my research was to put the jeans on and mark where you want the rips or frays while they are on you.

4. Good tools for creating rips and frays are; sandpaper, pumice stones, cheese grater (particularly the small side), razor blade and scissors.

5. Use any of the first three to fray the fibres in the denim and the latter two to create rips, if that is what you are after. Remember to put something in the jean leg to stop the fabric from fraying on the back side too (like a piece of wood – if you have one lying around!).

6. Do remember; rips and frays will get bigger over time, with more wear and washing.

I hope this has been useful – Hannah!!

Good luck and send in photos of your finished jeans!

John Lewis Grand Opening

Wales' largest department store opened it's doors today. So it was only right that we went to take a look! It is officially MASSIVE!!

The photos are of the store. I am wearing Topshop boyfriend jeans, Topshop satin pumps, Matthew Williamson for H&M scarf, Gap white tee, Primark navy cardie and thrifted leather shoulder bag. Rocking the casual look!

Shopping ban update: I managed to resist the temptation to buy anything. Probably having the boyfriend with me helped. But I plan to go back tomorrow to check out the haberdashery department more thoroughly.

Will write more soon, love, SG

Learning to walk in heels: Week 1

First week: accomplished.

I have walked into work in my pumps each day but as soon as I have arrived at my desk each morning, I have slipped my feet into my heels and have worn them for the next eight hours.

The heels above are this week's choice. They are 2-and-a-half inches high. I will be upping the heel height for next week.

Italian style

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Italians know how to dress. I could not spend 10 days in the home of Gucci, Prada, Missoni and others and not write something about Italian fashion.

La Bella Figura literally means 'the beautiful figure' but in Italy it means a way of life. It refers to a look, a way of presenting oneself and is apparent in almost every aspect of Italian life. Not only is Italy the home of some of the world's greatest fashion houses and a nation aiming to dress to impress but the cars, buildings, art, food, wine, language and more aim to impress too.

In a country where the police uniforms are designed by top Italian designer Armani, it is not surprising that Italian women take great care and pride over every aspect and detail of their appearance.

Shoes are like a religion in Italy. And heels in particular. For a country with so many cobbled streets it seems incredible that Italian women have not swapped their four-inch heels for flat ballet pumps. But no. The way to do it, I am reliably told, without incurring a broken ankle, is slowly!

You will certainly not see an Italian woman dressed in trainers. Ever.

Italian women dress to stand out and to be noticed by men but that does not mean that they dress in an overtly sexy manner. They do not go in for very mini skirts or bare midriffs. Instead they choose clothes which flatter and fit their figure. A bra strap, ‘accidentally’ on show is also perceived as sexy. And what they wear under their clothes is something that Italian women also pay great attention to. It is impossible to walk down any Italian high street and not see at the very least five or six lingerie stores.

As the seasons and trends change Italian women have an uncanny knack of picking out only those that suit them and their body shape, thus Italian style and fashion evolves much slower than in some other countries.

Ultimately, it is not about what you wear so much as how you wear it, the attitude with which you wear it. La bella figura.

Learning to walk in heels!!

My job is a little like working in a school, in more ways than one! But one way in which it is like school is that we have 'holidays' and term time. So today was the first day of term. As such, after a summer of jeans and casual attire, it is now back to the smart business wear.

In an effort to look more chic and together this term I have decided to try to 'learn to walk in heels'! I usually spend my time living in my ballet pumps so this might be a challenge.

As I walk to work, I am going to allow myself to wear my trusty ballet pumps to and from work, at least to begin with. But at work I will spend the full eight hours in my heels.

The size of heel on my shoe rack ranges from a conservative two-inches to a rather outrageous four-inches! I will, therefore, start at the beginning with my smallest heel for the first week (from tomorrow) and work my way up to the highest.

Tomorrow will be the first day of my experiment. I will let you know how I get on, and obviously post a pic.

Love, SG

Monday morning pic-me-up

Sinta gave me the idea for this new feature on my blog, when she said the sunflower photo made her smile on a dreary Monday morning.

So, each Monday morning I will posting a 'pic-me-up'!

10 things I like about... Dresses

The exhibition yesterday, coupled with my blog entry about 'my first fashion memory', inspired me to write this list:

1. With one item of clothing you are dressed. Simple. Elegant. Classic. Chic.

2. Opaque tights. Fashion's gift to women.

3. There is no occasion where a dress is not appropriate.

4. They never go out of style.

5. Heels or flats. Both go perfectly.

6. Accessorise. Anything goes and often make the outfit.

7. A Very Special Dress can make you feel a million dollars.

8. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty did not wear jeans. Ever.

9. The LBD is an icon. The Little Black Dress never makes you feel fat/frumpy/ugly. It just can't.

10. Quite frankly, dresses are perfect.

Dress of the Year

Following my trip to the Fashion Museum in Bath yesterday, below are a few photos from the 'Dress of the Year' collection at the museum.

Top left, Julien Macdonald, 1997; top right, John Galliano; bottom left, Missoni, 1974; bottom right, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, 2008 (the dress Kate Moss wore for her 34th birthday).

The black evening dress below was designed by Bianca Mosca and worn by the British ballerina Margot Fonteyn in 1949. It is exquisite, I think!

The photo below also caught my eye on my way around.

Below is a dress that you might recognise. It is from the Oasis Floral Frocks collection of 2008. The collection took inspiration from historic dresses and re-worked them. The dress below is my particular favourite and was re-worked from the 1962 dress behind it (left).

Hope you have enjoyed the photos. Will write more soon, love, SG

Sunday best

Shopaholics Anonymous

Beautiful day spent in Bath. Went to the Thermae Spa and Fashion Museum (photos and comment to follow later).

Also walked through the newly re-developed city centre. It's much brighter and an all together nicer experience these days. However it did rather feel like a recovering alcoholic being taken to the pub. Torture! But I survived.

No Ban On High Heels

As London Fashion Week celebrates 25 years, London Mayor, Boris Johnson - infamous for his not-so-perfect and scruffy dress sense - launched the proceedings at a cocktail reception at Somerset House.

Despite the controversy it caused last year, Boris wore the same crumpled Paul Smith suit and Marks & Spencer shirt that caused a diplomatic incident at the Beijing Olympics. He may not be the sharpest dresser but it is obvious that he is comfortable in his appearance and that is no bad thing.

He went on to tell the gathered fashion crowd that, "As long as I am Major of this city, there will be no ban on high heels". Well, hallelujah!

More on LFW soon, very excited to see what Burberry has in store on Tuesday!

My picks of the Week are;

Sunday (20/9); 1300 Matthew Williamson; 1700 Julien Macdonald; 1800 Vivienne Westwood Red Label;

Monday (21/9); 1000 Luella; 1430 Christopher Kane; 1745 House of Holland; 1945 Twenty8Twelve; 2045 Pringle of Scotland;

Tuesday (22/9); 1830 Burberry.

The Time Of My Life

Currently watching Dirty Dancing in Italian. I LOVE this film! I'm sure I speak for most girls/women when I say, I would love to "dirty dance", particularly like the dance at the end of the film.

RIP Patrick Swayze.

Shopping ban update

Technically I have not broken the ban but this afternoon - after a day spent in the flat watching Friends on DVD as it poured outside - I spent a small fortune in Intimissimi, the Italian lingerie store!

Do you ever go into a shop and the sales assistant is just so nice (tells you, you speak beautiful Italian!) that you feel obliged to buy something?! Well, that coupled with the beautiful lingerie sucked me in!!

Oh well, at least I have new lingerie to show for it!

Will write again soon, love, SG

First Fashion Memories

As seen in the photo posted on Wednesday (9 September) I have bought Vogue Italia. In the supplement - Vogue Talents - which identifies up and coming fashion talents from Italy and further afield - they have interviewed a number of fashion students at Italian design schools; one of the questions asked is, "what is your first memory linked to fashion?" It got me thinking about my first memory linked to fashion.

I think it must be of the beautiful party dresses my grandma used to buy me and my sister for our birthdays. I remember two in particular, both made from a chiffon type material. Both with under skirts. Both cream. Both with blue flowers. One had a wide royal blue satin ribbon around the waist; the other, a length of the floral material from which the dress was made. They were quite possibly the most beautiful dresses I had ever owned at whatever age I was at the time (at a guess, somewhere between 6 and 9). But it wasn't so much what the dresses looked like - beautiful as they were - but how I felt when I wore them that remains in my memory. This is possibly my first experience of the impact clothes can have on how you feel and behave. I felt like a princess in those dresses and found myself behaving more like one too - avoiding outdoor games and eating birthday cake with extra special care. This respect for beautiful clothes has remained with me ever since. As well as that feeling I still get when I put on a particularly beautiful dress; I think these memories are also the root of my love affair with dresses in general.

German MTV, Grease The Musical and Tuscany

What, may you ask, do German MTV, Grease The Musical and Tuscany have in common? Not much. Granted. But Friday morning, in Tuscany, on our hotel TV we came across German MTV playing You're The One That I Want from Grease. Apparently this is completely acceptable. In Germany.

Watching the video, however, I got to thinking about the effect clothes have on peoples perceptions. Sandy changes, completely, the way she dresses and looks in order to get Danny. This clearly challenges today's commonly accepted wisdom that women should dress for themselves and not for any man.

I have always been of the opinion that a woman should dress for herself and never for a man. This philosophy probably explains why I rarely wear heels and the poor state of my underwear drawer! But I do believe that women often look most sexy when they are comfortable and even at their most casual. Sure, a corsetted dress and killer heels look amazing, if the woman wearing them is confident enough to pull it off. But equally, a woman in the supermarket with her hair pulled back, a pair of jeans and a jumper thrown on can look just as sexy.

Carine Roitfeld, editor of French Vogue, is renowned for her attitude that it must be uncomfortable to be fashionable. Indeed, she never wears flats and even went so far as to outlaw Uggs in French Vogue offices, saying, "I do not like comfortable". This argument does not carry much weight with me. Yes, I have been known to wear extremely beautiful and yet supremely painful heels but never in a manner in which I might be described as "sexy". I love fashion and I love to look and be fashionable but running a very close second is my desire to be comfortable. When I am comfortable then I can worry about feeling sexy.

I return to Sandy's outfit in the video. How can anyone dance in `sprayed-on' leather trousers and skyscraper heels?! Only a film star could carry that off, I'd be flat on my back in minutes if I tried that!

So my advice is this, if you feel comfortable and happy in what you are wearing, the rest should take care of itself.

Love, SG

Spotted: Italian chav

I didn't think they existed but apparently they do!

Spotted in Siena yesterday. A guy walking down the street decked out in white, everything was white; his cap, his zip top; his joggers and his trainers!

Another sideways shot.. For now!

Had to take a photo of this girl at Pisa Centrale, waiting for her train to Firenze! I just loved her jumpsuit and hair! Lovely 60s feel to the outfit!

Lovely blogs

Just want to give a shout out to a couple of blogs I have come across. Or rather, who have come across me!

First, thank you to Laura at The Sideshow Scrapbook, I will add you to my daily reading list just as soon as I am back in the UK! Lovely blog!

And also a shout out to another Laura at Kisses and Curls. Another lovely blog.

Love, SG

Apologies for sideways photo!

Doing this from my Blackberry is proving to be more difficult! Will try to post a photo the right way round later tonight!

In Siena at the moment. Spent yesterday in the city and came out into the Tuscan hills last night for a hotel stay. Lovely!

Italian Vogue

As promised, this is me in Lucca this morning!

I am wearing, a purple Zara dress, gold Dorothy Perkins sandals, a gold shell pendant, M&S sunglasses and am carrying an M&S handbag and a copy of Italian Vogue.

Ciao from la bella Italia!

We are now in the beautiful town of Lucca! After a rather eventful journey to the airport - where we only just got the flight - never good when they have to call you twice and you are still only just going through security!

But here we are.

The apartment is gorgeous! Spacious and airy!

I took advantage of the jacuzzi bath this morning!

Off to the beach later, with any luck!

Now that I can get on line I will post some holiday outfit pics soon.

Sex and the City 2

I think this might be my first blog on Sex and the City but I can promise that it won't be my last. I love the SATC girls. I didn't watch the series on TV the first time round but have since acquired all six on DVD and spent most of my time at uni watching them all again and again. So, nothing made me happier than the announcement that there would be a movie. And now for the sequel.

Filming for Sex and the City 2 began this month and although there are few photos yet available of the girls, I came across the two below today and had to share them! Love Carrie's outfits.

One day to go!

Off to Italia tomorrow! Very excited! Also concerned that the packing is not coming on as quickly as it maybe should be!! But I always find that packing is one of those tasks which will fit into whatever time is available; a day, a week or just an hour. It gets done because it has to! So my packing will take care of itself.

Unless we can find a little internet cafe in Lucca there will be no blogging for the next 10 days. But please check back just in case and if not, I'll be back into it in a week and a half's time.

Till next time, love, SG

Thank you for the comments!

Just a quick thank you to everyone who has left comments for me! Love to hear from you all :)

Due giorni!!! And How To... Dress With Style On Holiday

Only two days to go until we will be jetting off to la bella Italia!!! I cannot wait.

Trying to finish off all of my washing at the moment before I start to pack. The problem I always find on holiday is trying to remain stylish, rather than falling into the trap of not bothering to style my hair or putting make up on or indeed taking much care over my clothes. This holiday I have made a promise to myself that this will be different, that I will not look back on the holiday snaps and think, nice location but who is that??!!

So this is my 'how to... dress with style on holiday'.

1. Sandals. These have been 'in' for a few summers now so it's not difficult to find a stylish pair on the high street. I have a few (four!) pairs of sandals including a tan pair for day wear and a gold pair for evenings.

2. Dresses. Perfect for day and evening and require no effort whatsoever. Zara are brilliant for simple and chic (and cheap) jersey dresses which carry over from day to night. I have two which will be coming with me.

3. Colours. With a tan, colours compliment beautifully. I usually stick to a monochrome palette of black, black and more black at home but on holiday I am going to try to mix it up a little!

4. Embrace your natural hair. This does not mean (as it has often for me) just leaving it to turn into a frizzy mess but instead means that if your hair is prone to frizz, why not take some mousse and scrunch it up for some relaxed curls.

5. Go for the 'no make up look'. Again, this does not mean not wearing make up necessarily; just wearing as little as you can get away with. Today, I got some Boots No 7 Tinted Moisturiser for a little coverage on holiday. I will be teaming this with mascara and a little blusher in the day and adding a colourful eyeshadow for the evening and a coral lippy!

6. Accessorise. Bangles, earrings, pendants all complete the holiday look.

Will be keeping these in mind as much as possible while packing tomorrow!

Will write more again soon, love, SG

Clutterfly

If you haven’t heard of them yet, you soon will have. Clutterfly is the new name in jewellery design.

For anyone looking for a special piece at an affordable price this is for you. Natalie tells us, “The majority of our product range can be customised to suit each persons need from colour, finish and text.”

Jaime Winstone has been photographed a number of times recently sporting Clutterfly creations and gushed, “I’ve just discovered these. They are by this really great independent designer, perfect for fun and impact.”

Homegrown, unique, with a celebrity following (Lily and Alfie Allen are also fans) and prices from just £4; Clutterfly is a must for any fashionista’s jewellery box.

Four and a half days to go, caro mio!!!

I am going to blame it on the shopping ban. Really, it's the only way to explain how I managed to walk into MAC at lunchtime to grab an eyeshadow and came out £45 poorer! But if I can't update my look through my wardrobe I figured I might as well update my make up bag with a few new goodies! I got a lovely tinted lip conditioner that will be perfect on holiday next week as it is a gorgeous pink colour and has an SPF15. I also got more mascara - a girl can never have too much mascara! I black eyeliner - for smoky eyes for dinner tonight! And, of course, the eyeshadow that I originally went in for. I resisted the £20 tinted moisturiser but may have to go back for that before the holiday...

The countdown to the holiday has now begun. Only one and a half days of work left now. And only four and a half days before I am back in my beloved Italy. Did I mention that I studied in Italy a few years ago and have since been in love with the place? Well I did and I am.

Off out for a girly dinner tonight. Will try to post my outfit (complete with the smoky eyes as promised!).

For now, baci, SG

I got these from my mum today, so thank you mum! They make me smile!

Gossip Girl's Taylor Momsen

This girl has style! And now she goes and does this to her hair - I love it!!!! Makes me want to go straight home and curl my hair!!

Photos photos photos!!

This is the barge that took us across the aqueduct!

This is the gorgeous view of the river Dee with the steam railway on the right of the picture, from the pub where we ate on Saturday in Llangollen.

This is a part of the journey. Think this made us want to hire a barge and go off on a holiday in the UK!!! Wouldn't be so nice if the sun wasn't out though.

Hope you like the photos. (The ones of me didn't look as good as these!)

My fashion for the Bank Holiday weekend consisted of Topshop boyfriend jeans, an M&S man's jumper and converse trainers - very shabby really. Will try harder this week.

Love, SG
