Friend Friday #48: Locational Influences

Taken from the balcony of the apartment where I stayed with friends on a trip to Paris last Spring

This week's Friend Friday topic is all about how where we live has a lot to do with how we dress.

1. What part of the world do you blog from? (feel free to be as specific or as vague as you are comfortable with.)

Visual Friend Friday: Where I Blog

Source

This is where I wish I blogged from. A beautifully organised workspace all of my own. When I saw this in last week's The Simply Luxurious Life's weekly newsletter, I fell in love (if you can fall in love with a desk!!).

We are currently in the process of house hunting to buy our first house. It is a long and slow process as we work out what we want from our first house and then work out the reality of what we can afford to want. Personally, I would like a little corner where I can set up a desk properly for my blogging. However we currently live in a rented two bedroom flat that we are fast outgrowing and so, this is where I blog:

This week is the very last of the weekly Friend Friday posts, after more than a year, Katy has decided to change the format to fortnightly questions. For this week's topic, Katy said:

Vahni from Grit and Glamour has a post several weeks ago in which she outlined her personal uniform or outfit formula as she dubbed it.

1. What’s your go-to outfit formula?

Friend Friday #45: secret fashion loves

Source
Of this week's topic for Friend Friday, Katy says:

"This was partly fueled by a suggestion from Suz of MissVinylAhoy and partly by my own realization that I like some odd things since I started blogging – things I never would have looked twice at before."

1. Since you began blogging do you notice a change in the types of things you gravitate towards while shopping?

Friend Friday #44: Food

This week's Last week's Friend Friday topic was food, glorious food! Katy asked us to, share the recipe to your favorite seasonal dish... the one you love to make and love to eat this time of the year. Before I headed off for my long weekend away, I didn't have time to post my recipe, so when I made it this evening I figured now would be as good a time as any to post it.

This really is a terribly easy and absolutely delicious meal to make. (Please note, it does seem to create an enormous amount of mess and washing up in a very small amount of time!! But then maybe that's just me.)

Friend Friday #43: Summer Trends

For this week's Friend Friday topic, Katy asked us: What are the top 5 Summer trends that you are looking forward to wearing this season?

You might remember we answered the same question for Spring a couple of months ago (if you don't, you can find the post here!).

My top 5 summer trends that I'm looking forward to are:

1.       Braids:

As seen on the catwalks at Alexander McQueen, Valentino and Hermès

The perfect style to keep unruly hair looking chic on holiday, at the beach!!

Post Swap Friend Friday #40: Blog Pet Peeves

As I am away sunning myself and celebrating my birthday, I have asked a few of my favourite bloggers to guest post for me. Today, France of Oranges and Apples and I have swapped Friend Friday posts - so you can find my post over at Franca's blog. But before you go read mine, make sure to check out Franca's post:

Madame de la Sofa {42/365}
Unrelated photo that came up when I searched
flickr for ‘annoying’ via here.

Hello!

This is Franca from Oranges and Apples. Emily and I are swapping posts today, for Friend Friday, where the topic is top 5 things that annoy us about blogs we read. I’m probably going to come across quite harsh, so I just wanted to say right from the off that none of the things I will be talking about will make me immediately stop reading a particular blog, and I completely understand how and why they happen, but they are things I dislike and will make it less likely that I’ll return. Please excuse any rantiness!

1. Poor grammar, spelling and quality of writing. Writing is hugely important to me and I think any blogger should make the extra effort to make sure that their writing is coherent. I generally try to proofread everything a couple of times before I post. But I appreciate that that’s not always possible and I do post some pretty rushed stuff myself sometimes. I am much less bothered by typos than by mistakes that make me think the author actually doesn’t know any better. Top 3 offenders:
  • Would of instead of would have. Where did this madness start, please? It somehow seems to have become acceptable, but it is not. It makes no sense, and it’s not even any shorter. If you can’t be bothered with would have, and even would’ve is too much effort, by all means write wouldve. I use didnt and wasnt occasionally, so I won’t judge. But I will judge people for making up a completely random alternative spelling. Desist.
  • Wonder/wander. The world at large (including Mr. Oranges and Apples) seems to not realise wander exist. They’re not even pronounced the same!
  • Their/They’re. Obvious.
Ooops, that was quite a lot in a oner! The rest of them are shorter, I promise.

2. Poor photography. You don’t need a great camera to take good pictures, and the internet is awash with outfit photography tips and there’s plenty of easy free editing software out there. Life’s too short for badly lit blurry photos in front of cluttered backgrounds.

3. Pop ups asking me to subscribe to the blog feed before I’ve even read the page. There is nothing that will make it less likely for me to actually subscribe. Follow options should be easily accessible, but pushing yourself onto unsuspecting readers is just rude.

4. No share buttons for posts. I didn’t appreciate just how annoying not having these is until I joined twitter. It drives me mad when I want to tweet a really good blog post, and then I have to go to an URL shortener site, and shorten the link manually, then go to twitter and write the thing. Chances are I won’t bother.

5. Personal bitchiness. I don’t mind people writing about their private life, I really enjoy some highly personal blogs, and neither do I mind people complaining about things (including things people have written on blogs) and having a bit of a rant. But bringing these two together and complaining about a specific person in your life that readers don’t know is just bizarre. It feels like being cornered by a stranger at a party who feels it’s ok to just offload all their weirdness. You have no idea who they’re talking about and you know that what you’re getting only one side of the story, but no idea what they other side might be and it’s just awkward. If you must bitch about specific people, please make it generic enough for other people to relate to. Complaining about people always cancelling plans at the last minute = OK, complaining about a particular friend and how they always let you down = not so much.

And those were my top 5 annoying things! Thanks Emily for having me!

Friend Friday #38: A Woman's Right to Shoes*

Shoes are my "thing". They always were. They always will be. So imagine my delight when this week's Friend Friday discussion was about this very subject! And then imagine my despair when I realised that I didn't have any time - due to work commitments - to write said post. Friend Friday #37: Fitness and Fashion

I'm sure most of us have been glued to our television sets today, watching Prince William and Catherine Middleton marry in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey this morning. But as their celebrations continue in Buckingham Palace this evening, our lives return to normal. Ah well.

This week's topic for Friend Friday is fitness. Not something that I confess to know too much about, but we shall see, as I answer the questions posed:

1. Do you keep some kind of fitness routine? Why?

Friend Friday #36: Inspiration

we heart it

To further mark one year of FBFF this week we are going to answer the same set of questions that Katy asked this time last year. I didn't sign up for FBFF until it was almost four months old* so I am particularly pleased to be able to answer these questions, for me for the first time:

1. Which celebrity (celebrities) do you look to for fashion inspiration?

This is the official one-year anniversary of FBFF! So Katy wanted to do something about gratitude for the big day. Friend Friday #33: Rules of Engagement

Source

This week's Friend Friday topic is Rules of Engagement. As a new blogger the rules of engagement with others in the blogging world is uncharted territory. For example, how do you deal with Tweets, emails, DMs etc… from people who seem to be only pushing their own blog. A lot of what we all learn about how to do it is from trial and error. But this week's posts from all of the Friend Friday bloggers might help new bloggers to learn from our mistakes:

1. Guest posts are a good way to gain new exposure. What do you think is the appropriate way to go about securing a guest spot?

Some bloggers actively ask for guest blog submissions, or have a page dedicated to explaining their process for approaching the blogger about it, like mine. But for the most part, make sure that if you want to guest post on a blog, you know what that blog is about, what makes the blogger tick and the style of the blog. Check before sending that the blogger hasn't already written about the subject - if they have, don't despair, why not find another blog it might fit into? To start with, send a short email, explaining who you are, giving a link to your blog, and a brief outline of the post you had in mind. If they like it, great. If not, try someone else? Or ask how it could be changed to fit. Once you have written the piece and sent it to the blogger, don't be upset if when they edit it a little. It will happen. Make sure too, to link and tweet the link to the guest post once it is published - it's only polite. If you'd like the opportunity to guest post here, on Sugar and Spice, head over to my page and drop me an email. For an even more comprehensive and coherent guide to pitching a guest blog, check out Liberty London Girl's post over on IFB.

2. Leaving comments is essential to growing your blog. But how can you leave a comment without coming across as ‘Follow Me. Follow Me!’?

Leaving comments is something that always gets me. I can go for a few weeks leaving thoughtful comments and then another few when I am still reading all of the same blogs avidly but not leaving any comments. That's bad, right? If it's a blog you read and comment on often, a short comment every now and then is fine - just to check in. But for the most part, I try to leave a comment which demonstrates that I have actually read the post on which I am commenting and might even add something to the post. Chelsea, over at Dear Winnie my new blog addiction), recently wrote a great post all about commenting and laid out her 4-step guide to writing a comment:

1. Say whether you liked the post or not (and use the person’s name!).

2. Say what you liked or didn’t like (see the next section for more on this).
3. Say why you liked or didn’t like it.
4. Thank the blogger and wish him/her well.

3. We’ve all gotten a mass email at one time or another asking for blog exposure, a link exchange, etc… But the mass emails don’t work. How do you make your email stand out from the crowd?

Unless I have an actual reason to, I don't tend to send emails. If I'm planning a specific post or series of posts that I would like input from other bloggers on, then I will send an email, but I make sure they are to each individual and a little bit more personal than a group email.

4. In interacting with other bloggers where do you draw the line between seeking support and begging for exposure?

I think that's just it, any communication should be genuine and, if possible, have an additional mutual support angle. If you are simply asking for a link and nothing in return, expect maybe a reciprocal link, then it is unlikely that anyone will respond.

5. What’s one rule of engagement error you made and how have you remedied that?

In the beginning, I used to leave very short comments on posts on any blog. I was very indiscriminate and impersonal. But, as I have discussed above, I have learned the error of my ways and am now (for the most part) a reformed commenter.

What are your dos and don'ts of blogging?

Friend Friday #32: Feminism and Fashion

"Dress shabbily and they remember the dress;
dress impeccably and they remember the woman"
-- Coco Chanel

we heart it

With International Women's Day falling at the beginning of this month (on Tuesday 8 March), this week's Friend Friday topic is somehow fitting: feminism. It is also one which has sparked much debate, particularly since the proliferation of fashion blogs. Indeed within the fashion blogging community itself there has been discussion and, some might say, "soul searching" over how these two seemingly opposing notions can be reconciled. The Feministified blog, with others, has begun her own Feminist Fashion Bloggers network, a network which brings together bloggers who identify as feminists whilst also proclaiming their love of fashion.

For me, my own feminist experience begins with my studies and my other "passion"; politics. It might seem like a simplistic position to start from, but hear me out:

By May 6th this year (2011), the people of Wales will have had the opportunity to vote three times in less than as many months, on two separate occasions (a referendum last week on more law making powers for the National Assembly, and in May in the four-yearly elections to the National Assembly and a further UK-wide referendum on electoral reform for Westminster elections). Many won't vote. As a woman (and, I suppose by dint, a feminist), this saddens me. As a politics graduate and a keen history student, I am keenly aware of the struggles by several generations of my fair sex to win our right to be allowed to vote. Indeed, even today, in the twenty-first century, in some countries the right to vote in free and fair elections is a right women and men can only dream of – to give up our right therefore seems rude and foolish, at best, and ignorant, at worst. Indeed, this week I read a hugely compelling account of the struggle women face to achieve equality all around the world.

But my interest in politics and the history of the right to vote does not mean that I don't care about how I dress or my appearance, it does not mean that I don't put on make-up or put on a pretty dress or a pair of high heels. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Feminism is defined as: "the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men".

Does caring about how you look/dress mean that you can't also care about how much you are paid or your right to vote?

Feminism has always been about the right to choice: so why then must we choose between feminism or fashion? Surely, we can choose both?

The idea that a woman can be both fashionable and a feminist seems to run in complete contradiction to the frivolous nature of fashion and those who choose to exist in its world. But maybe herein lies the problem: for years, we, women, have allowed others - men and other women too - to belittle fashion and any sort of an interest in looking good as frivolous and have allowed ourselves to be branded air-heads. But when have these people who so belittle us stopped to think about their own hobbies or interests or passions; doesn't it seem rather glutonous and greedy to sit over a five course meal and consume as many bottles of wine and discuss the tone or character of said wine? We need to eat and drink to live, it might be argued; but to eat and drink to such quantities when a simple meal accompanied by a glass of water would suffice? Afterall, no one wanders around the office naked. Do they?!

I think it is high time that we reclaimed the right to be frivolous with fashion and a feisty feminist to boot.

we heart it

1. Do you think there is an incapability between feminism and a love for fashion?

Clearly not. I think that, unfairly, a stereotype has been formed by - mainly men - of women who are interested in fashion. I think it is fuelled by a lack of interest on their part and a lack of understanding. This, in turn, has led some women to believe that in order to achieve equality with men we must also adopt this attitude. But that is where the problem, for me, lies. I don't think that women should have to discard their interests in favour of male pursuits and hobbies in order to be treated equally, instead we should be able to retain our "female" interests* and yet still be treated equally in terms of pay, politics, jobs, etc.

2. There is more to each of us than a love for fashion, how do you incorporate every aspect of yourself into your blog?

I'm not sure that I do, really. Fashion, until I started writing this blog, played very little of a role in my life - except for a rather worrying shopping addiction. I studied politics at university for seven years (no, I'm not a slow learner! I did a masters after my bachelors degree) and I now work in a political environment. But I prefer to keep this separate from my blog, whether or not this is a good thing, I'm unsure of; what do you think?

we heart it

3. With the fashion industry still being a male-dominated profession, how do you think it would differ if women played a larger role?

In a recent post on For Those About To Shop in which Laura identified her Feminist Style Icon - Diane Von Furstenberg - quote the designer:

"Christian Lacroix once told me that women designers make clothes and men designers make costumes. I think that’s true."

This is probably the crux of the issue; if women played a larger role in the design houses there would likely be less of an emphasis on controversial collections that seek to break taboos and more considered collections that reflect the lives of the women who will ultimately wear the clothes on show.

4. How is your self-image and the way you carry yourself informed by your beliefs?

I work - and live - in a fairly conservative environment and I like to use fashion and clothes to show a slightly less serious side to me.

5. Do you think clothing/makeup/hair helps communicate the truth about yourself or are those things superfluous add-ons?

As much as we might protest otherwise, or hope it not to be the case, first impressions do play an important part in our opinions of people. Of course, these can change, but it isn't always the norm. Therefore, I think clothing/hair/make-up plays a hugely important part in communicating the truth about yourself.

Remember to check out the other contributions to this week's discussion over at ModlyChic. And if you would like to be a part of the Friend Friday Group, you can find all of the details here.

*NB: I do realise that there a lot of men who are also interested in fashion and women who are interested in more traditionally "male" hobbies

Friend Friday #31: Finding the balance

we heart it

Blogging can often feel like a full-time job and when you have one of those already it can feel incredibly hard to find the right balance in your life. Katy, of ModlyChic and Friend Friday fame, wrote an awesome post this week: How to Blog More Often without More Time. Which seems to be an exceeding good introduction to the question she posed for this week's Friend Friday top: How do you do it all and still live, work and play as you should?

Friend Friday #30: Beauty Products

Source
I admit it, I am so excited to read everyone else's responses to this week's Friend Friday topic. Aside from fashion, I am addicted to buying the latest make-up or beauty product. During a recent rummage in the cupboard in our bathroom I discovered three - yes, THREE - unopened bottles of fake tan! Now, that seems a little excessive. I have therefore made a pact with myself not to buy any new beauty products until I have used up all of the ones I already have (obviously, I can buy shampoo if I have used up all of my shampoos but still have five bottles of body lotion in the cupboard!!). So, you'd think that with all of this buying, I might know a thing or two about beauty products but I still feel woefully ignorant. But I will do my best for you:
